Why Bees?
At least a third of the food we eat we have managed to grow thanks to pollinators such as the bees.
By moving pollen from flower to flower they help plants to reproduce over long distances. Without the bees our world would not be able to provide us with many types of fruit and vegetables. Honeybees are very social. They have between 10 000 and 70 000 bees in a colony. They all work together as a team with three types of bees in the hive: the workers, the drones and the queen.
The worker bees will fly out looking for good sources of nectar and pollen, they can go several kilometers away from the hive to find these. Once they find it, they gather what they can and return home to the hive where they tell the other bees about their special find. They do this through a special dance, the waggle dance, that they use to communicate to other bees where to find a good nectar source they found.
Bees work hard and store all the honey as food to last them through the colder months when there are fewer flowers to collect nectar from. A healthy bee colony produces 2 to 3 times more honey than they need for themselves so this is why humans can take some of this special honey gold for ourselves and enjoy the many health benefits they carry.
